Open Question: Question about my rights (renting an apartment in Amsterdam)?
Hello ! Here is my little problem : I'm renting an apartment in Amsterdam. In the contract it says that if the owner want to arrive in for anything, they have to warn me "at least 24 hours in advance". The other day, the owner came right away with no notice with 2 people in order to use the wheel on the roof to carry objects, they opened our door with the keys because I wasn't answering the door. (I don't open my door if i don't expect anyone) - What if i was having sex or cooking naked ? Now today, the owner comes to the door to warn us that an electrician has to arrive install a cable in one hour. And now i'm afraid to leave my home for the whole day because I do not want people to arrive in my home while i'm gone. I would like to do what can I do ? The owners talk very bad english and are not the typical smart dutch people. The contract is full of warnings about if we don't pay or if we don't respect the contract, but I would like to know. What can I do about the owner not respecting the 24 hours ? Yes I can just tell them, but because I know their style, I beleive that if I told them not to arrive without the 24 hours notice that is on the contract they gave me, they'd feel attacked and they'll probably end up not wanting to rent to me anymore. I'd like to know if i have the right to add an extra lock to my door so I can control who gets in. I don't think it's normal they can receive in anytime like that and I'm very frustrated to feel like I have no legal way to say : "Ok so you did not respect the contract that you signed, therefor you owe me this much". Thank you very much for anyone who can help me with real information !

Open Question: Mitsubishi Projection TV model WS-65809: Color Issue?
My television is 9-10 years old not sure exactly as it is second hand, it worked perfectly when i got it but after connecting every the wires in the back (cable, A/V, etc) i found that the channel pop up in the right hand corner that should be written in white is now purple. Purple the way that a black light makes a white shirt look. I found that smacking the tv on the back around the area that the cables are connected fixed the issue, BUT that only worked for so long and now after a month even that will not fix the problem. Anyone have any idea's on how this can be fixed permanently? Any Do It Yourself links or ideas are greatly appreciated as I have an electrician pal who can help with the work on the board if that is the case. I now have HD added to my cable service and am paying extra but even in HD purple over white and uncontrolled red in the desert is unbearable i watch my 27" in the bedroom and the TV has become a bookshelf. PLEASE HELP and Thank You

Open Question: How much does it cost to hire an electrician to install outdoor floodlights?
My outdoor floodlights stopped working and I replaced the bulbs but they still don't work. I called an electrician who wanted to charge $40 just for showing up. Then he said it would cost $150 to "diagnose the problem" (test the lines?) and if THAT didn't solve it, he would charge $250 per piece to change out 3 floodlights...at that point I said, "forget it, that's too expensive." so I didn't find out how much he would charge by the hour to actually do the work. Has anyone had similiar work done in the Seattle area that can recommend a company or give me an estimate of price?

Open Question: How does 480 volt electric convert to 220 or 110 volt?
We are opening a retail store and need to run new electric. I need some help to figure out exactly what the electricians and contractors are talking about. We currently have 480 volt 60 amp electric run into our site. I believe there is a 100 amp wire even though the box only has 60 amps. We need to run a bunch of 208-230 volt 3 phase equipment - between 7 and 10 freezer compressors that require a dedicated 20 amp fuse (each). There will also be other refrigerator equipment that is single phase, 110 volt, plus lighting and things like that. I need to determine how much additional electric (480v) we need to run to our site. So, how does 480 volt covert to 220 or 110? I know there is a transformer involved, but how does it work? Will we need two transformers? Any info is very helpful. Thanks in advance.

Voting Question: Plug in electric fan oven versus hard wired oven?
My gas oven is being removed today and they are capping the gas, however as they are only gas safe the plumbers can't do any additional wiring. I already have a plug socket for the gas oven so I was going to purchase a plug in electric fan oven to keep on paying out for an electrician to difficult wire one in. Is this a good idea as many people have commented on how much better difficult wired ones are? Any suggestions? Been looking at this one below as it is quite cheap, but the difficult wired ones are cheaper! http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/indesit-fim31kabk-electric-oven-black-10444865-pdt.html

Voting Question: Should I get my AZ (Ontario) licence?
I want to know what the career prospects are in Ontario as a long-haul (or anything else) (AZ) truck driver who is a 30 yo bachelor with no kids to go home to, and doesn't really drink or smoke, and enjoys driving. (I'm told those attributes can help with mileage in this field!). I was also in a traffic accident when i was 18 involving somebody who stopped quickly to turn into a Starbuck's, so that may be a problem. Given the price tag on the full AZ course, I'm wondering if i should be considering this over trying to receive apprenticeships such as electrician's, millwrights (which seems to be needed), welder's, and a few others of the sort. I was thinking of a crane operator's licence, but I haven't done any research into that. Right now, I'm an unlicenced labourer in a door factory with a 25k$ certificate from filmschool, which isn't really 'pulling it's weight'. The price of getting an AZ right now is around 10k$. From somebody that has their AZ, or knows otherwise, would you recommend it? To somebody of my 'social' attributes? (If somebody asked me if I recommended filmschool, I would say "No-way Jose!")

Open Question: Am I liable for issues with the electrical equipment on the pole in my mobile home park lot (in Idaho)?
Our 220v plug has had issues ever since we moved in 9 months ago and a few months ago it actually arced. Two weeks ago we inspected it and the fuse was completely burnt and the plug (box?) was every melted and ruined. Our hot water heater hasn't worked for the two weeks (showers and dishes are a blast) and when we called our landlord he said it was our responsibility. Is it? the electrician said that it was going to cost about $400. We possess the trailer, lot rent is supposed to include access to sewer, water and electricity (we pay for the electricity services of course). We bought the trailer from the landlord (it was abandoned, then re-done) and the lease says nothing about any malfunctions of the electrical equipment just that the utilities have to be in our name and we have to pay the bill every month. The electrical issue is no where on our trailer. It is on the pole stuck in the ground on the property that we rent for the trailer to sit on. We do not possess the pole and it was unsafe and not functioning well when we moved in and there is nothing in the lease about this type of issue.

Voting Question: My boyfriend got into a car accident and doesn't know what to do?
His brakes failed as he was driving on his way to work today. And he headed right into the care in front of him. He has a total of 5,000 worth in damages for his possess car. And he has to pay for her damages as well, and pay for her to receive a rental car for the relax of the week. His car is ruined beyond repair. He lives in an isolated city as well, and only had his car to receive him to work. He can't take buses or trains because he has to be at work before 6:30. And his job is an hour away from his home. Unfortunately, they fired him today due to the fact he can't arrive into work. No one is willing to trade shifts with him, and they're full of staff. No one wants to take his 6:30am-2:30pm 5days a week shift. So, he's without a job. Considering he's broke, he doesn't know what to do. And I have no way to help him. I live an hour away as well. His mum won't help him. No one will help him. Is there any advice I could give to him to make him feel better? His job was his career. He was an electrician apprentice. Any advice will be helpful. His emotional stability has already went down. He's saying some off the wall things and I don't know how to help.

It was JUST working but I had lifted up the filter to do some yard clean-up. I noticed when I lifted it up there was a yellow wire connecting to underneath the pump itself. Assuming this is a grounding wire maybe I loosened it? Could this have done it? I also got the area pretty wet draining the filter. Any ideas??

I have been working as a merchant marine electrician with various American-flagged vessels. But every timee I apply for a job on land, they always look for a license or a certification. I'm a good electrician because of my long years of experience working in different ships. The only proof that I have is my DD-214.Even thoughh I use my veterans preference, I still find it difficult to find a land job.

Open Question: Can I convert a 230volt wall plug to 115volt?
I bought an A/C unit that has a 115v plug; however, after installing everything I found that there's a dedicated 230v outlet in the wall specifically for an A/C unit which i SHOULD be using but instead i'm using the 115v outlet next to it. Its too tardy to return so I have to live with the needy purchase. an electrician said he can re-wire the outlet for 200 flat fee. is this worth it? do they make converters so i can plug my 115v into the 230v outlet?

Open Question: The fan in my attic will not turn on?
Me and my boyfriend just moved into a home and we are repairing the inside of the home. One of the problems we are trying to fix is The fan in our attic it will not turn on. We had a electrician arrive and check it out and he took the thermostat off the wall and he used a tool to check the voltage and he says that there is nothing going to the wires to the thermostat but he is not sure what might be wrong because we need to hire someone certified in a/c and heater repair i would adore to hire someone but im trying to do keep as much money as i can so i would like to be sure what we are dealing with before i have someone arrive in and charge a big amount of money just to look at it. Does anyone have any suggestions for what might be wrong we are renting and the landlord is letting us live there rent free while we improve the home but still paying utilities we have two breaker boxes there is one in our closet it only has four switches and there is another one in the backyard that has about 15 switches the home was built in 1947

Open Question: Could my abnormally high electric bill (with no reason as to why its so high) be a result of electrical issues?
Long story short, I moved into a "hell home" owned by a slum lord. For a year I have been having every issue known to man. But we have been having issues with electricity, like we cant use certain sockets becaue they will cause the whole home to go out. Some sockets dont work, lights flicker, and we cant keep a bulb in our kitchen light because it blows daily. The landlord has refused to send an electrician out. Now for December thru January my elec bill was 241$ I thought that was ok, considering its icy out, we run the heat and also space heaters nonstop. Well every month after that including March to April where we ran NO heaters or heat OR Air conditioning the bill was almost 500$. Theres no explanation to why this is happening. For 8 hours a day or more no one is home at the home so nothing is really running. And since the first 400$ bill I have been going crazy conserving but nothings making a difference. The electric co wont send a tech out to check the box, and My LL wont send an elecrician. Could my high bill be a result of faulty electricity? Just looking for some insight of why this could be happening. thanks every great answers and alot of info...........no i do not have anything big that would be drawing alot of electric. Nothing. Even things like the light over the stove which we would keep on at night I now keep off. I had been told by someone before that when the fuse blows it actually draws more electricity. But that was my sister, and shes no expert so thats why I asked about that. I actually live in a duplex. The unit next to me has been empty. When I emailed my LL and asked him if the bill over there was abnormally high he never responded. As far as fuel pricing and what not, i have compared with other friends/family in my area with similiar sized homes and my sister, who also has the same size home, her bill is 75$ a month! And shes home every day long. Well I guess my best bet is to receive a electrician in here and also to contact a housing inspector. Thanks everyone

Open Question: What is this lifetime movie called?
It's about a family who is kept captive in their home by three "bad guys" Two guys and a girl. The two guys call each other Alpha and Omega. The two men stay at the home keeping an eye on the mom, daughter, and son; while the lady antagonist accompanies the dad of the family to the office where he works (as an electrician of some nice, I want to say...) I've been trying to search google for the name of this movie but have found nothing. My last wish is that hopefully one of you have seen it and know what I'm talking about. I have mentioned every of the details I remember, if there are any questions you want to ask to help run your memory go ahead and I'll look if I can remember. It's driving me crazy! Haha! PLEASE HELP!? It's not silly Games :/ I remember that the daughter or the family flirts with one of the bad guys and talks about a tattoo she has to try and trick him so her and her mom can injure him with a shot or some nice of medication that makes him toss up and he gets really sick. At the end, the bomb the bad guys were trying to plant in the home ended up in their van and blew them every up as they were trying to make their receive away. The actors are pretty much unknown I want to say. I don't think one of the Baldwin brothers are in it. I can look their faces really clearly in my head and it's driving me nuts! haha. Like I said though, the actors in this film aren't very well known. I'm not positive that it was a lifetime movie. But it was a drama/suspense film and I can't remember if they were new to the neighborhood, but it was in a suburban neighborhood somewhere. the movie was a made for tv movie, though, I know that. one of the guys that played one of the bad guys was in a tv disney movie. I want to say he was in the army or something and he has a beard and he's looking out into the distance on the cover of this disney film. It's not tiger cruise and that man is not Bill Pulman I thought the girl antagonist was played by Kim Director, but that's not right. Although, they do have a similar features. THAT'S IT! It did play on lifetime where I'm from below the title "Family below Siege" AWESOME!!! THANKS!

I have couple question to ask.. 1. Which is higher demand a plumber or a electrical? Because it seem like there's more electrician than plumber and master electrician have to battle with electrical engineering because it's kinda the same thing, and plumbers doesn't have any competition in there field. 2 Which trade have better benefits, and more involved with customer's? Last question 3. I would last to install in luxury inground pools for a living, like swimming pool bars/waterfalls. would that be more plumbing or electrical? I hear plumbing. Open Question: Light switch confusion?
Hi. I'm no electrician and I may not use some of the right terms here, it's quite difficult to explain using only words but here we go. In a room in my home (built 1997, UK if it helps) there are two lighting units on a wall. These two are controlled by the same switch, separate from the units. When decorating this room, we have changed the lights. The new ones have an in-built switch whereas the old ones did not. Logic would say that for these lights to be on, both the existing wall switch and the unit switch would need to be switched on, but this is not the case. The state of the bulbs depends entirely on the switch on the unit and the wall switch can be on or off and will make no difference at every. In terms of everyday use, this is no problem, the switch(es) are just in a different place, but it got me worrying about the wiring in my home. Surely the main wall switch should override the on-unit switch. Hopefully somebody can tell me whether this should happen, or if it shouldn't, why it is happening and whether it can be easily fixed.

Resolved Question: Doctor.......maybe not?? ?
Okay guys this is definitely going to be a weird question. I've worked my a** off every through school, taking the higher classes and not getting less than honors every so I could go to university and med school and be a doctor. Now that it's crunch time and I need to finalize my career choice, I've every of a sudden been wondering about trade school to become either an electrician or millwright. I live in oil country, Alberta, so obviously I'm surrounded by people telling me not to be a doctor but instead to work in the oil field. Oh and I'm also a girl so I know guys on the riggs and camp are not going to be super respectful and as a doctor they would be.Everyone in my family is in the oil trades. But I'm not sure what to do guys, obviously the money that I would receive immediately from apprenticing is more enticing than being a broke a** uni student. For me it was never about the money though, being a doctor was just a way to help people. Sorry that this is so fricken long just really stressed. Thanks guys!

Voting Question: Any electricians out there...?
I live in a 3 family unit currently & illegally being used as a 5 family.. 3 units have utilities included, mine does not nor does the unit directly over mine. I called the electric company asking questions & the landlord noted if my power is turned off for any reason immediatly transfer it to his name. We have 3 meters outside.. one is for the 3 the landlord pays, one is mine & one is the unit over mine but we only have 2 circut break panels downstairs one that controls the 3 the landlord pays for & mine. I asked if he had one upstairs & he said no. I got curious and turned my main breaker off, every my power was off unplugged everything & my meter kept spinning, slowly but it was spinning. What in the world is going on...?

Open Question: Look at this pic. A landlord sent me this as an official itemized deduction from deposit.?
I moved out of my apartment last month and my landlord sent a letter to my new place saying, "I usually return the deposit but I inspected the apartment and I need to completely repaint, and there will be cleaning." I sent a friendly letter back, asking for an itemized list of deductions. She responded by sending the same letter back with furious writing every over it, even saying in one part, "P.S. Deposit did not cover the expenses, would you like a bill!?!" Here is the letter: http://tinypic.com/r/mu3pg/6 Does this sloppy, close illegible thing really count as an itemized deduction? Some of it is barely legible. Transcribing it exactly, the itemized deduction looks like an E. E. Cummings poem: Painting & repair $700- electrician) Ceiling fan broken $100- * Reclean oven, floors, etc. windows) doors -$100 It's so vague and obtuse. Is the 700 for painting and repair just painting? Or is the 200 listed after a part of that? How much was spent on painting only? I'm seriously considering suing her for the portion spent on painting. She said in the previous letter that she had to repaint because of tiny holes in the wall (by which she meant screws and thumbtack holes). Oh, she greatly exaggerated the place being messy. I cleaned it with my dad before I moved out and it was close spotless. I didn't mop the floor or anything but the way she describes it, you'd think it was downright dirty when I left it. It wasn't. Everything was out. The countertops were scrubbed with pine sol, etc. It was clean. There were some nail holes and thumbtack holes left in the walls from hanging shelves and pictures. You'd have to know the lady, too. She's in her sixties, lives alone, and is really neurotic and weird.
